How to Measure a Room for a Rug
Getting an accurate measurement is the foundation of a good rug choice. Clear the floor of loose items, then measure the longest wall and the wall perpendicular to it, recording both in feet or meters. Note where each major piece of furniture sits and how far it currently sits from the walls — this tells you how much floor is actually available.
Once you have the room’s dimensions, decide how you want furniture to relate to the rug: legs fully on, front legs only, or furniture floating around it. Add 18 to 24 inches of clearance on any open sides so the rug reads as a deliberate design choice rather than an afterthought, then round your ideal dimensions to the nearest standard rug size to make shopping easier.
Living Room Rug Guide
In a living room, the rug’s job is to anchor the seating area. The most common approach is to size the rug so the front legs of every sofa and chair rest on it, which visually ties the furniture together without requiring an oversized rug. For a more grounded, formal look, choose a rug large enough for all four legs of every piece to sit on it.
Sectional sofas typically need a larger rug — often 9×12 or 10×14 — so the rug can extend under the full width of the sectional’s footprint, including the chaise if there is one.
Bedroom Rug Guide
Bedroom rugs are sized around the bed. The most popular layout places the rug so it extends from beneath the bottom two-thirds of the bed and continues 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides and foot, so your feet land on rug rather than bare floor when getting up.
If you prefer the entire bed to sit on the rug, size up so there is an even border on all sides, including behind the headboard. Alternatively, two runner rugs placed on either side of the bed are a popular space-saving option, especially in smaller rooms or with nightstands that don’t leave much floor to work with.
Dining Room Rug Guide
A dining rug needs to account for chairs in motion, not just the table itself. The rule of thumb is to extend the rug at least 24 inches beyond the table’s edge on every side, so chairs remain on the rug even when someone pushes back from the table to stand up.
Round tables generally pair best with round rugs, while rectangular and oval tables suit rectangular rugs. A rug that’s too small under a dining set is one of the most common styling mistakes in the room.
Office Rug Guide
An office rug should cover the desk’s footprint plus enough room in front for a rolling chair to move freely — roughly 30 inches of clearance is a good target. If the desk sits against a wall, the rug only needs generous clearance on the three open sides; a desk positioned in the center of the room needs clearance on all four.
Choose a low-pile or flatweave rug for home offices — anything too plush will make it difficult for chair casters to roll smooth
